The Data Buddies Project is the means by which CERP collects its national survey data. Explore this page to learn about our methods.
We survey undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty members in computing department separately. All of our surveys assess:
Past experiences (e.g., participation in intervention programs)
Knowledge and confidence in one’s ability to continue one’s career path
Sense of belonging in the field of computing
Intrinsic interest in computing
Perceptions of one’s department (e.g., “chilly” versus supportive)
Breadth of one’s professional network
Persistence in computing (e.g., Ph.D. program enrollment; job placement)
Successes (e.g., publications; awards)

Participating Data Buddies departments receive customized reports on how their students responded on our surveys compared to students at structurally similar institutions. Click here to get a flavor for what these reports look like.
Our Data Buddies
CERP collaborates with computing departments across the United States (i.e., our “Data Buddies”). Our collaboration involves the following:
First, a department member distributes our surveys to their students.
Next, we provide a customized department report comparing students’ responses in a given department to students’ responses at other, similar institutions in our sample*. This report includes:
Finally, CERP utilizes these large datasets to compare intervention participants versus non-participants experiences in our sample, and to conduct social science research on diversity issues in computing.
* To protect students’ privacy, CERP only creates a department report when five or more students within a given department completes one of our surveys.
